For a new Silesia museum on the post-mining area in Katowice we proposed a landscape concept that emphasizes the region’s identity. Leaving the ground untouched, we moved the museum volume underground.

A grand window visible from the street suggests there is an art life underground, but the site’s silhouette with its Warsaw shaft and mining buildings is not disturbed.

The new museum forms a plateau for historical buildings, granting them priority. It is a contemporary, contextual volume – inscribed in existing topography and history of the region.
