Agata Woźniczka from BudCud has completed the authorial project “Hydroplanning Appendix” supported by a grant from the Ministerstwo Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego. The publication is a contemporary extension of the classic textbook Elementy kompozycji urbanistycznej by Kazimierz Wejchert, expanding his typology of the urban floor by introducing a new category: the water floor.
The Appendix defines the water floor as an element that deliberately accommodates water on the surface and integrates it into the logic of spatial composition, microclimate and public-space use. The publication systematises contemporary strategies for bringing, guiding and storing water in urban environments, proposing seven spatial configurations of the water floor and four modes of its operation — ranging from retention-based, through infiltrating and cooling, to flood-responsive solutions. Each type is presented through synthetic graphic gestures, inscribed as cut-outs in the pages of the book, emphasising shadow, water flow sequences and the tactile materiality of the composition.
The project draws on an extensive literature review, analysis of contemporary public-space projects and a series of study visits. As a result, the Appendix forms an atlas of simple, replicable design principles that enable water to be treated as a full, legible and meaningful component of public life — shaping comfort, seasonal rhythms, neighbourhood interaction and the aesthetic identity of urban space.
